PANDAS: Coming to a School Near You

Presenter:
Jamie Candelaria-Greene, PhD, BCET
Date:
Friday, April 20
Time:
12:30 - 2:00 pm

Have you noticed how different your student has become since he was home with that sore throat last week? He’s making strange movements, is inattentive; you can’t read his handwriting, and his once stellar math grades are now plummeting. On top of that, Mom tells you that at home he’s become moody, unmanageable, and even starting to wet the bed again- at age 12! These are some of the symptoms that are commonly seen in a medical condition known as PANDAS. Dr. Candelaria-Greene provides an overview of this often unrecognized autoimmune disorder, and describes its impact on behavior, attention, and cognitive skills.  Attendees are then provided with specific recommendations for accommodations, compensatory strategies, and other supportive services.

Jamie Candelaria-Greene is a Board-Certified Educational Therapist, has served students of every age and developmental level in Special Education.  Her work as a teacher, researcher, and professor of Education has spanned thirty years and three continents. Her writing focuses attention on effective educational practices, literacy, and the effects of health conditions and the environment on learning ability.  In her private practice, she provides educational assessments, academic support for adults re-entering education, and multi-sensory readiness skills for children at risk.
