Psychopharmacology: A Focus on Children and Adolescents

This training will highlight the differences between medication prescribing for children and adults related to age-specific metabolism, body structure, and development. Supported by clinical case examples, differential diagnostic tips will be discussed, targets for medication use in various conditions such as ADHD, depression, schizophrenia and psychoses, and bipolar mood disorders will be elucidated, and benefits and risks of approved medications will be highlighted. Generally held mechanisms for neurotransmitter activity in various disorders will be related to drug activity. The goal of this activity is psycho-educational and should enhance integration of treatment conducted by clinicians and prescribers.

Jerome Berney is a board-certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and serves as the Lead Psychiatrist for Alameda County. Dr. Berney has been certified by the Neuroscience Education Institute as a “Master Psychopharmacologist”.
